Spring 2015 Awards

The Spring 2015 Awards applications are open -- tuition scholarships and travel fellowships are open to both graduate and undergraduate students. Some awards require faculty nomination, others are self-nominated. Information about the Spring Awards and eligibility requirements will be posted in Crown Hall and is available as downloadable PDFs in the sidebar to this story.

All faculty or self-nominated students must complete an "Intention to Submit Form." If you are nominated by faculty for an award, they will give you an "Intention to Submit Form."  For self-nominated awards only, you may pick up a form in the Crown Hall Administration Office. Students must complete this form in order to indicate their intent to apply for an award and/or exhibit their work. The schedule and deadlines are below:

2015 UNDERGRADUATE SPRING AWARDS

Samuel Horwitz Memorial Scholarships
(Faculty-nominated; Exhibit Required)
Award: Up to four (4) awards of $1450 each, one for each undergraduate class, to be used for tuition. Eligibility/Requirements: Open to students completing their first, second, third, or fourth year of study. Studio professors nominate no more than two students from their section. Exhibit is to include no more than eight drawings and one model.

Edson and Fletta Danforth Scholarship
(Faculty-nominated; Exhibit Required)
Award: Three (3) awards of $4450 for current B.Arch. students to be used for tuition.
Eligibility/Requirements: Open to students who are completing their first, scone, third, or fourth year of undergraduate study. Studio professors may nominate no more than two students from their sections. Exhibit is to include no more than eight drawings and one model.

Dwight T. Black Memorial Scholarship
(Self-nominated; No exhibit required)
Award: Two (2) awards of $4250 for current third or fourth year students to be used for tuition. Eligibility/Requirements: Open to students who are completing their third or fourth year of undergraduate study. Students will provide: 1) one letter of recommendation, and 2) a one-page, 250-word essay summarizing how you hope to impact the built environment. Essay and letters must be submitted to Cynthia Torres by March 24. Finalists will be selected by the Spring Awards Jury.

George Danforth Traveling Fellowship
(Self-nominated; Exhibit required)
Award: Four (4) awards of $3500 to be used for travel.
Eligibility/Requirements: Open to students who are completing their B.Arch. degree (December 2014 or May 2015 graduation). Students will provide a one-page statement and proposed itinerary describing the purpose for travel. Statement and itinerary must be submitted to Cynthia Torres by March 24. Travel must be completed within one year of the award.

Jerrold Loebl Traveling Prize
(Self-nominated; Exhibit required)
Award: One (1) award of $3500 each to be used for travel. Eligibility/Requirements: Open to students who are completing their fifth year of undergraduate study and their B.Arch. degree (December 2014 or May 2015 graduation). Students will provide: 1) a letter of recommendation from a faculty member and 2) a one-page statement describing the purpose for travel. Letter of recommendation and statement must be submitted to Cynthia Torres by March 24. Travel must be completed within one year of the award. 

Sherwin E. Small Endowed Scholarship
(Faculty-nominated; No exhibit required)
Awards (2): Award ($4,000) to be used for foreign travel or tuition (if study abroad is not pursued).
Eligibility/Requirements: Open to students completing their third year of undergraduate study who have improved academically during the course of their studies at IIT with plans to study abroad. Must be a U.S. citizen with financial need. Students receiving other financial support from the College of Architecture during same academic year are not eligible.

2015 Schiff Foundation Fellowship for Architecture
(Faculty nominated—faculty nominations due March 13)
Electronic PDF Submissions Only (due March 27)-nominated students will be contacted with PDF submission details.
Five nominees from IIT will be selected on March 31.
Award: One (1) award of $15,000 to be used for any purpose towards education. In 2015, up to a total of five graduate or advanced undergraduate students will be nominated to the Art Institute of Chicago for the fellowship’s jury. Nominees must be in their last year of study!

AIA Chicago Award in Architecture (Student Design Competition)—AIA Chicago
(Student Nominated; Exhibit required)
Award: One award of $500 cash prize. The AIA Chicago’s annual juried competition of student projects will award first, second, and third place and honorable mentions. All winners will receive certificates, and the first place winner will receive the Benn-Johnck Award ($500). The College of Architecture will nominate up to five (5) students. Submissions are due at AIA Chicago (date to be announced).
Eligibility/Requirements: Open to 4th and 5th year undergraduates; final year M.Arch. and M.S. Arch. only. In past years, IIT has been invited to nominate five students.

2015 GRADUATE SPRING AWARDS

Nagle/Hartray Scholarship
(Faculty-nominated; Exhibit required)
Award: Two (2) awards of $1350 to be used for tuition.
Eligibility/Requirements: Open to continuing students completing their first or second year of graduate study and returning in the fall. Studio professors propose no more than three students from their sections.

Jerrold & Ruth Weil Loebl Fellowship Prize
Faculty-nominated; Exhibit required)
Award: Two (2) awards of $900 for tuition.
Eligibility/Requirements: Open to continuing M.Arch. students in their first or second year of study.
